Nothing shows better the hardships of the common soldier. The gritty reality is perfectly represented in this image. A group of “Landsers”, moving, patrolling, changing positions in the thick of the winter, soaked in a sea of mud. Reality poetry. No fancy poses, no staged nor proud faces, just utter brutality. Unknown unit. Maybe winter of 1944. The brutal weight of the changing war tide already sunk on the minds of these men.
